New To Gardening? Spring Gardening Tips For Beginning Gardeners

Spring is here! It became official for me when I rolled my clock forward an hour. It is sometimes difficult to notice the seasons change here in San Diego. It isn’t like that everywhere though.

My wife and I were discussing our vegetable and flower garden the other day. We discussed the problems we faced when we first started gardening. There should be helpful tips for first time gardeners that come with the purchase of seeds or plants. That would be awesome!

It could be done, but starting your very own garden can be a daunting task. If you learn anything from me, let it be this: start out small. It can become very challenging if you have never had a garden before. I would suggest starting out by purchasing smaller plants. Get a few plants and get them established. Try a rhododendron, a few small perennials and an azalea. Once these are established you can begin another plant that needs more attention.

Beginning with a smaller garden will help you figure our how your yard works. Like which places get more sun, or more shade. Plus, you can see what parts get the most water.

But before you even think about planting, you need to take care of some spring cleaning first. Old mulch needs to be scraped away and the twigs, branches and sand from the winter need to be raked off the lawn, shrubs and grass.

If you have perennials, hedges or small trees in your yard, the dead leaves and twigs need to be cleaned off so the plant can re-grow properly in the spring.

The wintertime can be tough on plants. Snow and ice can weigh down on the branches and make the plant lose shape, so it’s important to make sure they are properly taken care of for spring. In the winter plants can be damaged by harsh conditions. When springtime starts plants have to come back to their normal resting place. You should have some sharp prunes and clip off some of the dead ends.

You can start planting your garden during the second or third week of April, depending on the weather. If you start too early, the plants may not survive. This has already happened to my peppers.

Trees with root balls can be planted earlier. Their roots are already acclimated to the soil in the root-ball.

When your plants first go in the dirt they will need heavy watering every other day until they are established. This is a very important part to remember.

Good Luck!

How to Reduce Bathroom Moisture

Many problems can be caused by moisture in bathrooms. This is what I do when I find that moisture is an issue.

Hide charcoal in various places around your bathroom to help soak some moisture up. This also helps minimize any unpleasant odors.

How to Clean Grout in the Bathroom

Simple Grout Cleaning Tips

After time bathroom grout will begin to start looking gross. These are a some techniques to clean up that bathroom grout:

You can use a circular typewriter eraser to erase the dirt between tiles. Just rub it down the grout. Most typewriter erasers will come with a small brush to clear the eraser leavings.

Old toothbrushes are great for scrubbing mildew on the grout or areas where mold will grow. Hard to remove stains can be covered with an abrasive powder that contains bleach. Make a paste with the powder and let it sit for AT LEAST 30 minutes. Afterwards, scrub and rinse the area with warm water. You can find a variety of commercial products to eliminate mildew, but they usually contain bleach also.

Keep your grout looking new by gently rubbing it with a piece of fine grain sandpaper. To keep the grout looking this way simply coat it with tile sealer.

Momma!

How to remove water stains from wood surfaces

This is my method for removing those horrible water rings from wood tables, night stands, etc.

I mix some toothpaste with an equal portion of baking soda in a small bowl. Make sure the toothpaste is paste and not a gel type. Rub the mixture with your hand on the stain until it begins to feel warm. It could take a few tries for the water stains to disappear. Once the stains are no longer visible, use a damp sponge or cloth to wipe up the mixture. Follow up with your regular wood wax/cleaner and your wood surface is stain free!!

Great Benefit

Some of the many great benefits this job has to offer are the opportunities of meeting great people and visiting beautiful houses, condos, etc. Last week we had the chance on seeing one of the most beautiful house we ever saw in our lifetime. This house was located near a beach. It was gorgeous. Not to mention breathtaking. Unfortunately, we will not be able to retain their service due to undisclosed and privileged information. We truly appreciated that opportunity. Poppa and I were ecstatic on how wonderful this house was. We’re sure there would be more plenty of that great opportunities to come.Enjoy,

Momma and Poppa
